The first thing that catches one’s attention is appearance, and if one is going to be hipster, they must look the part. Let’s start from the top: the hair—the man bun.
The man bun has a long history long before its famous appearance of today. They date all the way back to Buddha himself. The fad has gone in and out throughout time; however, this time being back, it is the fad called “hipster”.
There being a few ways to do a man bun, let’s take a look at a couple of them.
First, we have the top man bun. This is when the side of the head is shaven, and the hair that lies on the top of the head (which is longer) is sleeked back and placed in a bun at the top of the head.
We also have the low man bun. This is when all of the hair is long, and he sleeks it back to put the bun at the bottom of the neck. One version of the low man bun is done as follows. Pulling all hair back, tie a ponytail at the base of the neck but against the head. Then, starting at the bottom of the hair, fold it into itself about one and a half inches at a time. Once you reach the base of the head where the ponytail hair tie was placed, tie a second hair tie in the middle of the one and a half inch long roll of hair.
In picking your style in your quest to be hipster, remember to do what feels natural, especially when it comes to styling your hipster man bun.
Here is your step by step for the top man bun (which, if you are wanting to do the low man bun, it’ll be the same, just take the hair low to the base of the neck when you are tying it back):
